 According to the Associated Press, sleep deprivation is a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease.  Up to seven million Americans with insufficient sleep are at risk for hypertension, heart disease, depression, memory problems, and immune system impairment.  According to the World Health Organization, night work may be a "probable carcinogen" because too much light at night may reduce hormones that are  linked to tumor cells.  In one study, subjects had sleep improvement after nine nights of sufficient sleep at the appropriate time.
